On February 4th, the electoral electors have convened in their respective states and the ballots were cast. Upon being sent to New York to be verified by Congress, the verification was unfortunately delayed due to Congress not reaching a quorum. Thus, on April 16th, Congress verified the honor of the ballots, and the results were released to the public. 69 ballots had been cast in favor of George Washington, giving him the vast majority and thus securing him the position of First President of the United States. Half of the second votes went to John Adams of Massachusetts, securing him position of Vice President of the United States, while the other half were split between 10 remaining candidates. Thus, giving George Washington just enough time to travel to New York City to be sworn in on April 30th, along the way he was given a hero's welcome by the people, cheering and festivals along his path, and upon reaching the Hudson River he crossed it in a specially made Red White and Blue barge. Upon the balcony of Federal Hall, Washington offered his oath of office to Chancellor Robert Livingston, placing his hand on an open bible. He then entered Federal Hall, to give his inauguration address to Congress, saying:
In these honorable qualifications, I behold the surest pledges, that as on one side, no local prejudices, or attachments; no seperate views, nor party animosities, will misdirect the comprehensive and equal eye which ought to watch over this great assemblage of communities and interests: so, on another, that the foundations of our National policy will be laid in the pure and immutable principles of private morality; and the pre-eminence of a free Government, be exemplified by all the attributes which can win the affections of its Citizens, and command the respect of the world.
Washington also made an interesting point, reiterating his renouncement of any compensation for his duties during the Revolutionary War to the House of Representatives, also renouncing any payment he may receive from his position as Chief Executive.
Meanwhile, Congress had also met and upon reaching a quorum began establishing proper procedure for how they shall operate. The Senate shall be presided by the President of the Senate, Vice President Adams, while the House of Representatives elected Frederick Muhlenberg as their Speaker for the first session. Thus, the new Federal Government has been convened, and a new era for the young Republic has begun, and it shall be seen how the Republic reacts in the world, given the new power afforded to the Central Government.
