Today, the Seventh of January in the Year of Our Lord Seventeen Hundred and Eighty Nine has passed an important deadline for the United States of America. For this is the date which the last session of the Congress of the United States under the now defunct Articles of Confederation had set for it's constituent states to choose their electors for the election of the First President of the United States. Indeed, 10 states that make up the United States have announced they have chosen their electors, using their own methods, however three have yet to do so. New York seems to be in the middle of a legislative mess in attempting to choose their electors, and as they have passed the deadline, will likely abstain in the upcoming Presidential Election. North Carolina and Rhode Island meanwhile, have yet to ratify the Constitution in their states, and thus legally can not take part in the election.
Though obsentiatly for the Election of the United States President, most have already acknowledged that General George Washington of Virginia will take his place as President, the mans popularity having skyrocketed since the start of the Revolution. In truth, the election is primarily for who will be serving as Washington's Vice President, with there being various possible candidates. Firstly, there is a man who some fear may actually tie Mr, Washington for votes, Mr. John Adams from Massachusetts, an ardent supporter of the new Constitution. Next there is Mr. John Jay who served as Head of Foreign Affairs under the previous government, and closely aligned himself with Alexander Hamilton and James Madison in calling for a stronger Central Government. And finally, there is George Clinton, being the odd man out by being opposed to the new Constitution, fearing the Central Governments ability to raise tariffs may unduly harm his home state of New York.
Due to the popularity of John Adams, Alexander Hamilton has begun taking efforts to ensure that he shall not gain enough votes to challenge Mr. Washington, sending missives out to those who have been chosen as electors by their state legislatures asking them to split their second votes to John Jay and John Adams, ensuring that Adams could not gain enough to possibly become President.
