Trade in Southeast Asia - A Whole New World
Post Body

It had been a number of years since the Kingdom's first unexpected visit from the Ayamerah people drastically changed the Vüolt view of the world. Doebi was no longer the whole world, rather an island in a vast sea, surrounded by lands both larger and smaller. This was scary at first, but quickly became a source of excitement... and profit.

You see, these strange people claiming the name of the God of the Harvest came in strange, large canoes they called "outriggers", powered by the wind and able to carry many men - a technology they shared most kindly and freely. This held implications both for the future expansion of the Kingdom, and the future relationship between the Ayamerah people and the Vüolt people. A relationship built heavily upon the trading of goods and services.

On the King's first visit to this faraway land, he was enamored by many of the things these people had to offer, but most interested by the strange armbands they all seemed to wear. They called them syiling and were made of a variety of different metals, ranging from tin to silver to gold. Upon returning from his voyage, he immediately had some made for himself, and they quickly caught on throughout the Kingdom, but substitiuting the widely-available copper for tin. Soon, these armbands became so widespread in both lands that they became a standard for trade, with the bands representing an increasingly-consistent value based on their material.

Soon, however, this started causing issues for merchants who needed smaller values than could be represented even by the lowest of syiling. To rememdy this, they began creating very small versions that could be worn on the fingers. These became known as jarisyiling, with the armbands becoming known as lengansyiling. Before long these because ubiquotous among the Ayamerah and Vüolt peoples, becoming both a form of common currency and an easy status symbol, with the wealthy wearing large numbers of rings, armbands, and even necklaces with rings strung along them. A few went even further, embedding the rings in their earlobes, noses, tongues, lips, and other extremeties.

With this common currency began the easy exchange of goods. Foods and spices were immensely popular, with each people finding new and delicious foods they could make by incorporating foodstuffs from the other. Services also saw an increase in trade, with Vüolt people being hired to help crew the exploration expeditions of the Ayamerah, and Ayamerah people being hired as mercenaries in fights against the Cult of Ponderet.

This increased interaction brought these disparate peoples closer than ever before, even showing signs of impacting language. Vüolt words were being used by the Ayamerah, and Ayamerah words began to be used frequently across the Kingdom of Doebi. Assuming this trend continues, within a few hundred years they might become so close as to only be distinguishable as two dialects of the same tongue.
