Tozàn Innovation in 1581 DFS: Boom Boom
Post Body
- Glasses were a practical application of lenses, which had been invented in Tozàn a short while before. The use of glasses was almost as limited as the pool of people who understood how they worked, curving light to correct for faults of the eyes. Clunky, handheld glasses were made to provide older scholars with failing eyesight a chance to continue their research. They were expensive and had to be handmade by experts, so they were quite rare. (Prerequisites1: glassblowing, lenses, academies)
- Carvel building was a technique not unique to the Tozàn but a useful boon (not boom) to all oceanfaring sailors: the hull design proved to be stronger than existing methods while not compromising the capability of ships to sail close-hauled and to head up as well as to tack. Lateen rigged and oarless Obibo dhows and ìnàwó were best suited to this style of sailing, thus enjoying the benefits of carvel built hulls. (Prerequisites: frame-first ship construction, double hull, multi-chine hull, lateen rigging and ships that utilise it)
- A Boom (navigational barrier) was a barrier used by the state of Tozàn to enforce riverine tolls. Long chains were strung across rivers allowing easy ways to collect fares for using the river. They were also used for military means, such as denying enemy riverine fleets access to a harbour and protecting undefended Tozàn ports. (Prerequisites: chain, pontoon bridge)
- A
BoomGhanjah (ship) wasalsoa type of dhow in use by theSùsiKóngò people, with whom the Obibo traditionally traded across~~ a different~~ seaaltogether, one made of sand with only one type of ship which had the tendency to spit and bite if you were not careful. However, Obibo merchants knew well the naval ability of theSùsiKóngò~~ and had before learned from them how to construct sambuk vessels and~~ would now also more or less learn about theboomghanjah in the same way. (Prerequisites: dhow, sambuk, multiple masts) - The English longbow was a superior variant of the longbow, known to the Obibo as the Obibo longbow. It had a greater draw weight, which allowed for greater power to the arrow and made the longbow all the more deadly. It was still just as long and usually even longer, with bows taller than men appearing at times. The best and greatest longbows in the world were of course crafted by the bowyers of Uwára, famed for their mastery of the craft.
- Ostrich farming (agricultural) was a profitable venture for farmers, even if the demand for the luxurious feathers and eggs was limited. Ostrich farming had been practised before, but the beasts were still around in the wild so why not do it again?
- Dambènìà (cultural) (see linked post for RP)
- Edafènìà (cultural) (see linked post for RP)
- The Mosquito net (trade) was discovered to Obibo merchants visiting Borìneme. They learned that not only did the nets made a soothing swish sound at night if the windows were open, they were also perfectly safe from pesky mosquito bites even with the windows open!
- The Tamarind (trade) also contributed to the happiness of merchants visiting Borìneme because after a good night's rest they had breakfast with a powerful fruity juice made from exactly this fruit. Upon returning to Tozàn they learned that the fruit appeared in the wild as well but until then no cultivation had taken place.
- The Marimba (cultural trade) was played in the city of Mbanza-kiKongo, which was attended quite regularly by Tozàn merchants. Just like the mangbetu harp and the shekere, these instruments were imported and adopted by the amàrì-uyó, the musician caste.
1 As with all other listed prerequisites I do not actually know if these are all prerequisites or if these are prerequisites at all. I am not a tech mod. They are there solely for the convenience of the tech mod.
