Tozàn Innovation in 1461 DFS: High Stakes Fruit
Post Body
- The Sambuk (dhow, multiple masts are present) was the next step of innovation of the dhow, capable of carrying more goods and traversing the African coasts more reliably. It was a weaker-hulled alternative to the Ìnáwo, a ship of similar size, but possessed greater speed and it was also cheaper to build. This made the sambuk essential in reducing the costs of trade, resulting in higher profits. A sambuk was more prone to sinking, but it was not so bad that it outweighed its benefits.
- An Archer's stake was a military technique that was adopted by the Tozàn longbowmen during their northern campaigns during the invasion of Tazaraga. Here the Alááshu encountered a formal cavalry fighting force, which was a real threat to the archer component of the Tozàn armies. As a response to the cavalry, Tozàn longbowmen were positioned closer to infantry and on advantageous terrain, but when Tozàn had the strategic upper hand they could sometimes afford to place sharpened stakes diagionally pointing away from the archers. Placed several layers deep at irregular intervals, an archer's stake made it impossible for cavalry to charge against the longbowmen and prohibitively risky to attempt a slower approach. It became easier to protect the archers and to prevent them from being outflanked by nimble cavalry armies. Roleplay 1 & roleplay 2
- An Oil well was the result of boreholes in the south of Tozàn, in the oil-rich Ewo-Ife region. Although it was already known for its wealth from palm-oil, the oil wells brought access to petroleum. It was a desirable product among alchemists, but also served as a more than adequate lamp oil.
- The Kamal was a simple yet innovate instrument Obibo merchants discovered on visits to Sus, where it turned out that every sailor was using them. The kamal allowed Tozàn sailors to determine their latitude, which was useful since most voyages were undertaken from east to west and from west to east.
- Liquid soap was a luxury, usually produced as in the north of Tozàn. It was scented with incense and made from salts that came from the Sahara desert.
- Horned melon (agricultural) was a wonderful tasting of fruit with useful properties, such a shame that it was so spiky on the outside.
A perfect metaphor for tsunderes. It could grow almost anywhere in Tozàn and suffered little from too much or too little precipitation and it was one of few greens, the most important other one being baobab leaves, that could be preserved for long amounts of time. Horned melon became a part of sailor and caravan cuisine because of this, which perhaps added to the speed at which it became popular in Tozàn. - Woodcut art (cultural) was an artform that came from mixing writing and painting with engraving wood. Often using southern hardwood, woodcut art became part of households as easily as normal paintings, maybe even more so because it was cheaper to produce. (I intend to use this as a prerequisite to woodblock printing if that can be done with a cultural technology).
- Castration (cultural) became a thing because of eunuchs... just read this if you want to know.
Trades:
- Raffia palm from the Oba-Ifà fa Kóngò
- Alcohol distillation from the Oba-Ifà fa Sùsì
- Kuba cloth (cultural) from the Oba-Ifà fa Kóngò
