The Alááfin knew about the Soninke, who had given raise to the colloquial Obibo word sonki meaning westerner. She deemed it necessary to send a sírícheche, an envoy, to the Soninke's leader, Oba Diobé fa Wágáduna Oba-Ifà, as he was called in Obibo.
The sírícheche had a standard set of tasks for meeting new rulers, which consisted of the following: acquire a (symbolic) tribute and a recognition of the Alááfin's superiority over Tozàn, safeguard the right of Obibo merchants to visit the ruler's land and safeguard the right of mtataza to spread the word of Kaya.
