In 516 BCE, Darius embarked on a campaign to India and marched through Bactria to Taxila in modern-day Pakistan. Darius spent the winter of 516–515 BCE in Gandhara, preparing to conquer the Indus Valley. Darius conquered the lands surrounding the Indus River in 515 BCE. This was around the same time in which Siddhartha Gautama become Buddha in Eastern India. What if Buddha went to Indus Valley and met Darius converting to his new religion ?
You frankly couldn't have picked a Persian king who was less likely to covert. If Darius converted and tried to enforce conversion on other Persians, especially that early in his reign, he would almost certainly be removed from power, and there's a very real chance that the Persian Empire just collapses.
Darius came to power through a coup and massive civil war/series of revolts in 522 BCE. In his propaganda after most of the rebellions were settled (the Behistun Inscription and various inscriptions at Persepolis and Susa), Darius rested his legitimacy on divine right granted by Ahura Mazda. If Darius Indianized his own religion too much. If he abandoned that early form of Zoroastrianism, the small amount of legitimacy he had in 516 would shatter.
