I do the same thing u/slim-ladle does, so the biggest issue is boats and jet skies coming into the swim area. I also use one of these so I'm more visible and have an extra level of safety if I get a cramp or something.

Yes. I haven't measured it this year, but you can often get in a couple of miles doing laps in the buoy area.
