Adding RAM question

Hi. I have a HP Pavilion and I want to add more RAM. I have been looking around online for the best deal, but before I buy anything I want to make sure I have the right product. I currently have a 4GB card. Can I use a single 8Gb, or should I get two 4g cards instead?
