Are cold sores different to oral herpes?

Not really sure if there's a difference. Recently been told I have genital herpes by a sexual health nurse and been put on antivirals for it but I've had cold sores every year for ages and so did my mum. Thought it was just normal. Should I also not do sexual things with my lips if I get a cold sore or they'll get herpes like genital sex during an outbreak?
