Inequality in Health Care for Herpes

Hello Gen Z for Change Team,

Iā€™m (insert name here) a patient advocate with Herpes Cure Advocacy. We are a grassroots membership-based, international non-profit advocacy organization with the goal of cure, treatment and prevention for herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2. This year we advocated successfully for an OASH strategic plan and national strategy which is in development currently. An early November joint workshop of CDC/NIH, a meeting we advocated for, was the first federal meeting for HSV in decades.

Nearly half of Black women in America have genital herpes and nearly 70% of Mexican Americans have HSV-1. Like many health disparities this infection primarily impacts minorities, women, and the LGBTQ community. And yet, there is no vaccine, no cure, and not even an accurate test to diagnose infection. Recently the Mpox outbreak was declared a public health emergency - at its peak of 658 cases a month in August 2022. CDC data shows there are just shy of 50,000 new cases of genital herpes a month. With no cure, test or vaccine, and no action from public health leaders.

We need help. The landscape for Herpes cure, treatment and prevention is a mess - and the federal government has done almost nothing to advance the field. Herpes Simplex Virus is spreading at will globally without public health intervention. Americans should be protected.

Also, HSV can cause neurodegenerative disease - such as meningitis or encephalitis - something the general public needs to know. Most health care providers are not aware of potential for neurological complications from herpes.

We need help with public awareness - can you all help Herpes Cure Advocacy to get the word out?

Sincerely, Your name here
