- Usher
- Jim Carey (name cleared- actually a case of extortion)
- "Spreader"
- Fear of Others self-righteous entitlement to disclose someone's status based on a situation that realistically, only the two people involved can know what happened exactly.
- Fear of communities that not everyone identifies with (LGBTQ )
- The topic of consent only recently entered popular discourse, and it's contentious because of our representatives.
There's a lot keeping me up at night this past week, and right now I'm thinking about herpes stigma through the lens of hate speech. Because when I look closer at how fear and ignorance (mine and others) looks on both sides of the disclosure issue it makes me wonder what direction is worth prioritizing based on the root of the problem.
I've seen one punitive law for disclosing someones positive status. And I had to look. Yet I have heard about the usual suspects whenever herpes status is brought up, and I find it shocking.
I thought I had a medical condition but now when I really reflect on everything I dismissed because I had limited experience and toxic information on the issue - it is much more. I don't just have a medical condition. I have to deal with what I consider to be unchecked hate speech, entitlement to my medical history "or else," and liabilities I am far more equipped to handle now than when I found out my "status" 18 years ago.
Tldr; Should I be surprised that it is still difficult to find any other lit on herpes hate speech on google, or is this not just another symptom of what is at the root of herpes stigma and non-disclosure?
