Finished Hello Neighbor 2 last night. There were a lot head-scratchers and aspects that didn't make sense, but one item I have a hard time understanding is how or why everything is misspelled.
The best explanation on the Internet is that the protagonist you play as, Quentin, has dyslexia -- but I have a hard time believing that. The first thing I noticed, though, is that not only are words' letters mixed around but they're also adding/replacing letters that aren't even in the word. So, okay, the argument then would be that Quentin also has a phonological awareness problem.
Here's my first issue with that. If this disorder is this bad, how the hell did he ever get a job as a journalist with the Raven Brooks Banner? Now before everyone comes at me that people with disorders or handicaps shouldn't be limited, there are still basic functions and skills some jobs need. Some manufacturing jobs that are physical require you to take a test to see if you can lift x-amount of pounds. I don't think someone with Parkinson's would make for a good surgeon. With journalism, you need strong reading, writing, and proofreading skills. I'm not saying someone with dyslexia couldn't be a journalist, but if Quentin's disorder is this bad he really, really would have struggled at his job.
Second, even if the Banner's editor/owner didn't have an issue with this, how did the government even allow him to get a driver's license? Again, I'm not saying those with dyslexia can't drive or aren't safe drivers, but if this dude can't even read street, destination, and informational signs, don't you think the DOT would have a bit of an issue with that -- that he's a little bit of an accident waiting to happen? My father-in-law got denied the last time he tried to renew his DL until he went to the eye doctor.
So, fine -- his employer and the DOT didn't have an issue with all of this and Quentin really does have dyslexia. But then if he can't properly process letters in the correct order ... how does he have absolutely NO issue with numbers? There are a handful of numerical puzzles that require a correct sequence; we see them (through his eyes) and somehow they're perfect and in the right order when we need to input them onto a safe or cash register (which also appear without any jumbled problem). Seems odd that if letters and words are getting screwed up so bad that number codes also wouldn't be a problem.
My last counter-argument against Quentin having dyslexia is his press badge. Everything is misspelled (or seen as misspelled) ... except one word: his own name. I was able to pause the game as he was jumping and his press credentials flap up, and I took a pic. A little blurry, but while "press" is spelled wrong, "Quentin" appears to be correctly spelled. Why or how could that be? We see even two-letter words misspelled but "Quentin" of all things is not??
Thoughts? Any other logical theory for all the misspellings?
