Like most HLL players, I was really looking forward to having a new faction. I'm British, so I was delighted to see my country added to one of my favourite games. Unfortunately, there are aspects to the implementation of the faction that don't work. Some are needlessly ahistorical, some create frustrating gameplay, others seem very half-baked. Some of my biggest gripes are:
- The standard P14 rifle is nonsense. An obsolete gun given only to the Home Guard should not be the standard battle rifle in the game. I don't know why this choice was made, I can't think why this choice would be made. It doesn't matter that much for gameplay but it's not the best signal that the faction has had care put into it.
- The Sten is underutilised. 4.5 million of them were produced, but it's hard to find a loadout that uses them. There were 6 variants of the Sten - use them!
- The Bren gun has no bipod/tripod, but the recoil is so severe that it is unusable without one. The Bren is entirely pointless, dead on arrival. I've played 4 rounds and already nobody uses it other than to try it, go "wtf", and change loadout.
- The developers seem to have used obsolete weapons that were only issued to the Home Guard to pad out the British loadout, which is understandable, but they have not implemented actual weapons that the British used like the Vickers and variants of the Sten.
- The AT launcher doesn't work at all like it historically did.
- A lot of the animations for the rifles make it seem like the player's avatar has never fired a rifle, with terrible recoil management compared to the animations for the M1 and Kar98. This makes them quite hard to play at times, especially when rapid fire is important. The Lee Enfield rifles were famous for their ability to (for a bolt action) fire rapidly and accurately, while the animations are contrary to that.
- The maps with the British faction are large open maps that reward good machine gun work and tank coordination. But given that the Bren has no bipod while the Lewis has a low ammo capacity, that places the Germans at a significant advantage. Given that the Panther wipes its arse with the plating of British tanks, that places the Germans at a significant advantage too. It's not fun. Giving the Bren its bipod would help a bit, designing British faction maps that aren't all open plains would be better. Right now the maps both play to the strengths of the German faction and against the British weaknesses. Playing British on these maps is not a fun experience.
In addition to all that, the increase in running speed makes it feel like I'm playing Call of Duty. One of HLL's key selling points is that it was an FPS that didn't feel like that. Now it does, so why shouldn't I just play Battlefield or CoD if that's the direction the developers want to take the game in? Post Scriptum is looking very appealing right now.
To say a couple of good things, the sound design is excellent, and the light British tank is amazing in the right hands.
Oh, and the LOADOUT BUG IS STILL THERE!!!
