Hey y'all,
I've been playing a lot of Pokemon The Card Game online recently and it sparked this fun little analogy about people.
For those of you who are not familiar in the Pokemon universe there are many different types of Pokemon for example (Fire, Grass, Water, Electric, etc.) In a Pokemon battle you may assume that some would have advantages or disadvantages. For example that Fire Pokemon are very effective against Grass Pokemon, but are ineffective against water Pokemon. But this is actually not true, and it is not true in life either.
The way it works is that Pokemon have weakness and resistance. For example a Water pokemon could have weakness for Electric type (the electric attacks hurt more) and resistance for Fire type (the fire attacks hurt less)
As a child in an abusive household we grow up thinking like someone who doesn't know about Pokemon, we think are ineffective towards other people. And like others are very effective towards us. But this analysis is not true when looked at more deeply and it is revealed that the parent is abusive. In reality it is like pokemon, we simply have weakness for abusive types (abusers hurt us more than other people do), and abusers have resistance for other people (it is more challenging if not impossible to communicate boundaries and have them met to an abuser than it is to other people).
