A few weeks ago, at the age of 40, I got a new psyc after my old one retired (there was a few years gap). In our first session he updated my medication to something newer than what I was that was more targeted.
For the first time in my life I have functional executive function. It is so weird. In the past I would want to do something and no matter what it wouldn't happen (well normally). Now I think "I should do a and b tomorrow" and magically a through m happens. I'm sleeping better, which has my general health improved. etc etc etc. I can't overstate how good it has been.
Of course I need now to work on a bunch of maladaptive coping mechanisms I've picked up over the years.
I say all this not to brag. But to talk about how effective medication can be and how sometimes you can be on something that can work (like I was) but is only actually half way there. Same as some meds don't work for people and not to be discouraged. Also that new things come out every year.
When I was young, mental health was something only mentioned in Silence of the Lambs and the internet didn't even exist in a meaningful way to talk about it on. We've progressed far and we will continue to do so.
So good luck out there. You'll have your time, even if its a struggle now.
