I was at a house party yesterday and met someone that was quite critical of my words even when I meant no offense and harm. For example I would joke about some topics and try to keep the conversation engaging and entertaining, however they would keep saying things like "You should not use that term _____ because it is offensive to me." Or "I find this really offensive. Are you a _______?" I am avoiding writing exactly what they used to avoid any drama/politics but hopefully you get the idea.
I don't ever mean to offend people, I just find humour the best way for me to communicate. Most friends are okay with me joking about things and they join in too. I found it almost exhausting talking to this particular person because almost anything I say they somehow turn it into a personal attack. Even when I realised they never found anything I said funny, I would tone it down and they still had that judgemental attitude. Eventually I stopped talking at all and just felt very self conscious.
Do some critical self analysis/reflection and ask yourself if they're actually right and what you're saying is disrespectful. I see you avoided telling us what terms you used that they objected too. What terms were you using?
