After finally managing to destroy my Tin Audio T2s (over the course of a few years, I left em in the wash a few times and finally killed the right one for good when trying them with my roommates headphone amp) I'm now looking for a new pair to destroy listen to. I'm not too upset about it, as they were starting to develop a lot of problems around the connectors, including intermittent connections - probably related to the washing machine - and they weren't particularly comfortable to wear.
I'm open to other headphone options if you think they'd be better for my applications, although I really desire the isolation provided by IEMs.
Outside of acoustic considerations, I'd like whatever option I get to be mechanically sound and have a very solid construction. I've had issues with damaged/fragile headphones in the past (e.g a pair of Porta Pros broken by someone else, and a cable repaired at least a dozen times on my HD 681s.) I'm only mentioning IEMs specifically because I plan to use these in workouts or in warmer environments, and sweaty headphones are not comfortable.
Source/Amp - I'll be running these on a variety of devices, including my phone (nothing special - my V20 had a quad DAC but my current Zenfone 6 does not), desktop computer (on-board audio) and a self-built single ended tube amp with approximately 4 ohms of output impedence fed by a source follower MOSFET. (I use this for my bass.)
I'd prefer a slightly higher impedence - 32 ohms or more - for the sake of driving it more easily from my own electronics shenanigans. I never listen at loud volumes, so lower sensitivity or higher impedence is unimportant.
I'll be using these for monitoring my bass playing and listening to music on-the-go, in public and loud areas. I'm looking for good isolation and comfort for long periods of wear, and ideally a cord that is resistant to tangling. (not interested in wireless due to the latency).
Acoustically speaking, I'm more interested in specification and performance than subjective value. Most important is bass extension: the bass doesn't need to be especially strong, but it to continue out into the sub-bass region and maintain its strength there. As for the other regions of the spectrum, I don't have any strong preferences - recommend whatever you think would sound good for my use case. I'd probably prefer a very flat response, but a more bass-heavy one is fine too.
Preferred music genre(s) - I listen to a lot of unusual music, but primarily progressive rock (and rock adjacent genres), jazz fusion, as well as electronic and occasionally classical music. Lyrics are rarely a focus or even present. I definitely want to hear the bass - but it doesn't need to dominate the soundscape.
Past gear experience - I've currently got a trustworthy pair of HD 681s that somehow manage to push on despite their abuse. I previously had a set of Porta (and then Sporta) pros, and enjoyed their bass response -- but the lack of isolation meant I had to listen at volumes that I thought were uncomfortably high.
I also had a pair of Tin Audio T2s for my last IEM: I didn't hear anything too special about them, and never found them particularly comfortable. Isolation (with foam eartips) was decent, but a bit lacking. I always had problems with the cables; often a single earbud would drop in and out and it'd get tangled very easily.
Please let me know what you think; I'm fine with being provided a large range of recommendations if you think multiple ones are close. I've already used the headphone finder from the wiki, but I don't think it provides specific enough recommendations.
