Fed up with Apple for such things as removing the 3.5 mm jack, I finally switched to Android after...well the rest of my life up to this point. Now I need headphones that work with Android that fill the role my Apple earbuds played. I recognize that Apple earbuds are pretty "low" quality but they were workable for the situations I needed them for, which are:
- I need headphones with the volume and pause control on the wire
- I don't need a ton of isolation
- I need them to work while running
- I need them to be able to handle bass without buzzing or breaking (but an impressive dynamic range or whatever is not necessary...these are not what I'll be using when I want high audio quality)
- I need them to fit in my pocket, so the smaller the better
and, perhaps what I am finding hardest to find is,
- I want them to be earbuds, and not the kind that go into your ear canal. It seems that everyone but me finds these uncomfortable, so they're hard to find! If this is too restrictive, I'm willing to try out some beginner level in-canal headphones and maybe I can get used to them, but I've never liked them when I tried them in the past. I don't want wireless headphones.
Budget - Given my needs I don't expect to need to spend much more than $50 but spending more than that would not be a budgetary issue if necessary, even up to say $150. Less willing to spend a ton on in-ear-canal headphones if I need to try to get used to them...

How the gear will be used - These will be for pretty much everything other than home listening. Running, on the bus, on an airplane, while I'm on campus, etc.
Preferred tonal balance - I want something that can do anything at an ok level. Doesn't need to blow me away.
Preferred music genre(s) - I listen to a wide range, including hip hop with lots of bass. Again--I don't need anything amazing here, just don't want the quality to be unbearably bad e.g. buzzing.
Past gear experience - Apple headphones (not airpods). I liked the form, the size, the wire controls, and was never bothered by the audio quality. Honestly I am looking to get as close to this as possible while still being compatible with Android :)
