Lobectomy during grad school
Post Body

Hi all. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s 5 years ago. I have a few nodules that I get an ultrasound on yearly. The biggest one has also had a needle biopsy a few years ago and was benign. My most recent ultrasound showed the nodule grew another 0.4cm. It’s now around 4.2cm.

I had a consult for a thyroidectomy and the surgeon recommended just a partial/lobectomy, which I’m fine with. I’m struggling to swallow certain things and I see it in the mirror now.

My biggest concern is that I am currently in a very rigorous graduate program. My surgery will be 7 days before the start of spring semester. I’ve read many stories on this sub that people felt ‘normal’ 3-4 days after surgery. For anyone that has had the surgery, do you think I can jump back into school again so soon after? It’s class almost 8-3 every day, lots of studying in the evening and weekends, 2-3 tests a week. Little to no down time until spring break in March.

I’m hoping to get some feedback about if this is feasible or if I should wait until I graduate (18 months).
