What hardtail to get for my son?

My teenage son wants a Hardtail that will last him thru college and hopefully beyond. So far we have on our list the Trek Roscoe 7, a Scott 940, a Cannondale Habit HT2 or a Cannondale Trail 6. What is everyone’s advice on these? Any insight or things we should learn of before walking into a shop is greatly welcome. Thanks so much!

All great options, if he wants to hit some more aggressive trails, I’d leave out the cannondale trail.
