I must say. I've been a Halloween fan for years. Michael Myers used to scare the everloving shit out of me when I was a kid. Throughout all my years, I had never seen the Producer's Cut of Halloween 6.
For years, it's been hyped up as the definitive version of the movie. Far superior to the theatrical cut. I have to disagree. I found myself growing to love Halloween 6. I used to always skip the middle trilogy, or if I did watch them, I'd skip 6. But it was growing on me. One of the better masks, the fall atmosphere had returned.
Then I finally came across the Producer's Cut. After watching it, I was speechless. Was this the movie that was hyped up to be better than what we got? It wasn't terrible. I did enjoy the longer interactions between Loomis and other characters, as well as more focus on characters. Slight differences that helped build a relationship between the characters and the audience such as the Strode family breakfast. But it was the cult aspect that really dragged the film to a halt.
I found myself thinking that Halloween 6 would have been better off ignoring, or even not acknowledging the Thorn plotline. That it would be much more appealing were it to focus on Kara, her family, with Tommy in more of a Loomis role. However, I will give credit to the writers for actually sticking with the storyline. It wasn't the best thing they could have come up with, but they at least stuck with it. For the Producer's Cut at least.
One glaring issue, one that occurs with both cuts of the film, are the weak endings. A combination of the two would be best, in my opinion. Stopping The Shape with runes, while internally consistent, really kinda defies the entirety of the first movie. Of course, injecting Michael with... whatever the hell was in those syringes, isn't exactly the best possible ending, but it is more satisfying than the stones. Though the shot of Michael walking away is definitely a highlight of the film.
Ultimately, the Producer's Cut just feels like a movie with the potential to be good, but got bloated, whereas the Theatrical Cut feels like a movie with the potential to be good yet got tarnished by meddling. Both versions of the movie were doomed from the start, it feels, by having to carry on a plotline from Halloween 5, which the writers had no clue on. A mystery box for someone else to handle.
Tl;dr: The Producer's Cut is the same level of quality, if slightly inferior to the Theatrical Cut.
