I want to grow my hair out, but I hate the way it curls. How can I fix it?

When I was younger and I grew out my hair it curled naturally and beautifully by itself, but now it curls badly like so, and since I've never had to style it myself (I've had it shorter for awhile). I want to grow my hair out but idk how to fix this. I already use styling cream which helps a bit, but this is still obviously an issue.
