Ok, so I have thick dark pubic hair that I haven't done really anything to get rid of over the years, so it's a literal bush down there. I'm wanting to get rid of it, but I'm not sure how. Shaving just irritates my skin, and I'm working my way into at-home-waxing, but it's too long to do anything with. Any advice on how to remove it without having to go in for treatments?
If you wax you might find that the bit at the front stops growing back, whereas the sides will be much more persistent and will always grow back (so my point here is you might want all the front to be gone or you might prefer a certain shape / âlanding stripâ at the front but bear your decision in mind before attacking it.
Do trim to shorten it a bit first, with small scissors (lift with your fingers and then snip above them, so your fingers are like a guard), or a trimmer.
Then Iâd suggest using hot film wax for that area, youâll need to buy a heater, and film wax pellets are easiest, youâll also need wooden spatulas. You apply it, let it dry and then directly pull off the patch itself (rather than using a strip). This is the most appropriate wax for that type of hair, it grips from the roots, it doesnât matter so much that you remove in the opposite direction as it does with strip wax - as often in this area it grows in multiple directions so this is difficult, and it aggravates the skin less. You can be efficient by applying a patch thatâs drying while you remove the one before it, working on alternate sides.
Iâd use strip wax for any leg hairs at the edge, on your thighs, and actually for home use Iâd say veet gel wax strips are as good as liquid wax and much easier to use (nb not for public hair)
You might get some blood spots the first few times so make sure to cleanse the area well before with an antibacterial pre wax and an after wax product. And after a few days when the skin has calmed down be sure to exfoliate regularly because pubic hairs can ingrow quite easily.
I know you want to avoid salon treatments but it might be worth considering doing so for the first couple, to get the hair reduced a bit & skin used to it and see the techniques. Iâd make sure the salon uses the type of wax you want to carry on with (hot for the coarse pubic hairs, strip for the straggly leg hair in my opinion)
If you dislike the texture of the coarse hair that you choose not to remove - if you donât do it all, then you could try beard grooming products to soften it and make less âcrispyâ if thatâs a problem.
