IPL Thigh Skin Help
Post Body

Hello, its my first time posting here. I've been using a Braun IPL for about 3-4 months and I've seen some very positive effects. However, I've also noticed that the skin on my thighs isn't as clear as I'd hoped it to be. As you can see in this picture there are a bunch of different sized red and brown spots and also what appears to be hair follicles under the skin. The brown spot on the right is just a birthmark, so ignore that. I exfoliate once, nearly every day, and always before I shave (once a week for IPL). I use a Treehut Shea Sugar Scrub with a semi abrasive cloth to exfoliate. Right before I go to bed I apply Gold Bond Rough and Bumpy Skin cream onto my legs (about 4 days a week). I don't know if this post is too much or if I should "do my own research", I have been researching it for awhile now but am kind of stuck and thought to ask here for help. I'm think that getting a special oil for shaving might be my next step but please let me know what you think.

You’re welcome :) your thighs being a particular problem could be down to what you wear? I’ve seen jeans / that kind of fabric in styles loose enough to move about but not so loose that they don’t rub at all, (especially if you do things like cycle or move about a lot that would cause trousers that go up and down on your thighs) cause that kind of reaction. It can make the hairs break off and just act weird, but also remembering that our body produces more hair in response to friction it could be down to that, or just general skin irritation because of it.

If you’re using a razor blade to shave I’d suggest trying an electric razor instead, with a long edge to lift the hairs and a foil to get close to the skin. It wont irritate the skin so much and also won’t shave the skin off from over the top of the ingrowing hairs, which then need to heal again and I suspect is causing what you’re seeing here. The ingrown hairs are a problem of course but you’re doing all the right things already about them. Your skin just looks really upset and irritated to me and if you’re damaging it with wet shaving it will make ingrown hairs worse as the skin tries to defend itself. Doing that might break the vicious circle and then the ipl will keep working in the background, and the remains of the ingrown hairs will come away as you keep exfoliating. The only other thing to try if you get a bump like a pimple is drawing paste - magnesium sulphate, to try and get it out without picking at it.

Maybe if it’s a really good one but in this situation you’ve got two problems - weakened, breaking hair and irritated skin, the more the skin is irritated the more it will defend itself. In my experience electric razors are less irritating than wet razors, and of these, foils are less irritating than the straight edge on hairs that aren’t long, so I think I it’s best to use a mixture of both on an electric razor. So if you’re suffering like this and have a straight one already maybe give a foil electric razor a try as well even just a cheap one
