Why did red dye turn my hair purple?

Recently I discovered my first gray hair. I wanted to dye my hair red, like how it used to be when I was younger. For reference I was a natural redhead who for whatever reason my hair has turned a boring brownish red color. I wanted the 20 year old me back, hair wise. Now I'm stuck with purple. Why did my hair turn purple? I didn't have any hair products or dye in my hair previously. The last time I dyed my hair was 18 years ago. Purple would be fine if I was a young teen but I'm 40! Help!
