Ways to straighten hair?

I know the bare basics of hair care like shampoo and condition it regularly, getting it trimmed to avoid knots and stuff. Well, I've been growing it out for a while and finally decided I want to start straightening it so that it's not just a big mess.
Obviously, I know about straightening irons, but I recall hearing that they're actually not that healthy for your hair for a few reasons, like moisturizing it. Because of that and also because hot things make me skittish because the few childhood injuries i got were burns I was wondering:
