Have been growing my hair out trying to get the look in the third pic, how should I ask for it to be cut?

Just had him texture it to take some weight off after continuing to grow it. My barber does more fades than anything and not a bad one at that but I feel like the hair almost looks kinda flat/not wavy in the pic like the pic, or am I crazy? Does my hair need to be longer or should I consider going to a stylist for this specific look?
