Is there a name for a stylist that can come up with a cut?

I have medium length unruly hair at the moment, and have absolutely no idea what style or cut I want to go with. I'm hoping to find a stylist that can look at my hair type, face shape, etc and come up with a suitable style. I've called a few places and they all act super confused when I asked them if they can "design* a hairstyle for me. Is there a specific type of stylist I need to look for? Or if anyone has a specific recommendation in the Los Angeles area, send it my way.
