Deleting Saves

I have a second save file where I wanted to see what Hell Mode was all about, decided it wasn't for me, and deleted it. But every time I launch the game, the save file is still there. It seems like until a save file is overwritten with a new one, deleting the file doesn't actually do anything. Maybe I'm just a little weird, but it bothers me that I now permanently have this barely started second file that I have no intention of ever going back to, but I can't get rid of it, I can only replace it.
