Dark Thirst

I'm sure it's probably just random and I'm unlucky, but does anyone know if there is any logic behind which weapon gets chosen to be buffed with Dark Thirst (the increased darkness gain buff)? I've gone through about 15 runs or so now where it keeps cycling between the shield, bow, and rail. My poor blade and spear have been gathering so much dust.
