What happened to Kotkaniemi this year?

Haven't been following the team that closely this year. Watched around a dozen games only this year, but won't be missing the playoff matches. Given Jesperi's performance last year, including the playoffs, it looked like they were gonna rely on him even more this year. But based on the games I watched that wasn't the case, and he wasn't even on the line up for the first game of the playoffs.
So what happened? And to what capacity do you see him being used in the future?
