To all the residential guys afraid to make the leap to commercial! Bit of a rant but worth it I feel if your nervous!
Post Body

As some back ground I started residential and was with the same small company for 7 years in Florida. The office was toxic and I came to work pissed off and yelling everyday. We only had 5 guys in the field (one was half retired and left at noon everyday, another was the ā€œsupervisorā€ who never did anything). When I got a job offer from a commercial company I was terrified but knew I had to make the change!

When I gave my two weeks the boss yelled and screamed about how he did so much for me and Iā€™m making a huge mistake because Iā€™ll just be a name on a piece of paper to them. He then told me to just pack my truck and get out of his face, I was not allowed to finish my two weeks and was fired on the spot. On my way out the door I hear the boss scream ā€œyour job wonā€™t be here when you come crawling backā€!

3 years later I love this company but have been given a better opportunity at another commercial that I am going to take. This company is one of the largest contractors in Florida and has been nothing but good to me. I gave my two weeks Monday and am allowed to finish working it all the way out, Iā€™ll also be paid out my 100 hours of vacation I built.

All the managers here even in different departments keep calling and wishing me luck. They also all have said Iā€™m leaving on good terms and my job will ALWAYS be here.

Moral: yes you might be a number to some commercial companies but if you find the right ones you can really be more of a family member than the small ā€œfamily ownedā€ companies!
