For some background, I've been working for a local HVACR service company that also does bigger commercial jobs at times. We have a small commercial crew, and an even smaller service crew. I spent a year working in the field while discussing with my boss/the owner of the business that we could be doing much more and making more money across the board if we would modernize some of our systems. My boss runs everything through his head. Profit is damn near impossible to pinpoint because of the way he pays himself. I finally convinced him to let me work in the office and help set up software and programs that would help us better price, find, and keep jobs lined out.
Things I'm currently working on: 1. Setting up a Service Agreement Membership 2. Setting up an incentives program for employees 3. Talking my boss into taking a salary so we can track profit and make proper investments 4. Setting up advertising and social media presence 5. Fully implementing service fusion from scratch, as my boss has no idea who our customers are or what we've done for them in the past. 6. Setting up new invoicing and billing processes 7. Pushing my boss to purchase more company assets so the business value itself can grow over time. There are a few "company vehicles" but the majority of us work out of our personal vehicles.
I'm trying to bring the company into a modern standard and could use any help and advice you guys have to offer. Our techs and installers make 20, our service guys barely break 25, and our supervisor makes 25. The main problem is that our boss has convinces himself it's 2012 and is stuck in that time when it comes to bidding and payroll. We took on a 500,000 hotel job last year that we were all super excited to have and finish early on. After getting in the office and looking over our PnL for that job, we made no money. It was never bid to make money. My boss is pushing 70, and is talking about stepping away soon. The reason I'm sticking around is there could be an opportunity for me to turn the business around if he steps away one day and allows me more autonomy. My endgoal is to make him and his company more raw profit per ticket so at the end of the day he can justify paying us all a little better. I've only spent a year in the HVAC industry but I have tons of office level experience. I can make advertisements, edit videos, make flyers, create most official documents, invoice and bill, as well as trying to implement a new business plan in general. I'm also currently tasked with the "project manager" role where I'm charged with keeping up with material deliveries and ordering product. Project Manager/ Secretary / Business Consultant/ Implementer. What should I be getting paid? And What are some tips that could help me navigate the future of the company.
