I recently had my very first recurrent outbreak in over five years (at least I think so anyways). There is a lot of conflicting data about how long the virus is still transmissible after an outbreak. Some sources say wait until sores are gone, some say wait a few days after, some say a week etc. Does anyone have a good rule of thumb for how long to wait to have sex? I should also add that I have a vagina and my partner has a penis, since that is pertinent when we are talking transmission rates. I am taking valtrex for this episode but not on suppressive therapy because, well… it’s been five years! How long do others wait?
