Leaky Taillight / Hatch Tripping Alarm and Dealership DGAF
Post Body

Hey all,

I have been looking at this subreddit for a while, but joined today so I could share my tale of woe. I recently (July 2021) purchased my 2016 HR-V; for the most part I really like it and I got a decent deal on it from a used lot at a KIA dealership. I purchased a third party warranty with Kia.

A few weeks into owning this car, I had the alarm go off on me at 4AM, waking up myself and all the neighbours on my street. OK, hopefully just a fluke - maybe someone went by with a bassy subwoofer, who knows.

A few more weeks go by - again, the alarm goes off at 4AM - this time, I notice that (1) it's raining, just like last time and (2) my rear taillight is filled up with water.

OK, dealership time. I try KIA first; they can't diagnose the alarm codes and ask me to bring it to Honda. I do so. After losing my appointment the first time, I finally get the car in for diagnosing and find out - during the check-in process - that the car has some KM's remaining on the first-party Comprehensive warranty from Honda. Great - although I sure wish I knew that before buying the third-party warranty, too!

Honda determines that - yes - a gasket has gone on the taillight, which is causing it to fill up with water, leaking down inside the hatch door and tripping the alarm. It's a $15 part, but $300 to get in there to replace it - oh, and I'm on the hook for the $150 diagnosis too (for some reason).

I did some Googling and found numerous posts here and on many other forums documenting the same issue; but I'm wondering if folks can share their own stories (or commiserate with mine). How did you get Honda to take responsibility; what did you have to pay to fix it; did the issue come back?

Thanks!

Hard to see the water line, but the condensation is obvious
