First off, I feel as a Fandom we ignore Hagrid too much and also don't recognize how big of a thing he did. He created a new species. That's some big news. Think of it. In real life what if someone made a combo alligator puppy for example. Would be huge news and would be considered big smart science person. Is Hagrid secretly a savant style genius? Him revealing secrets/easy to fool means nothing of his academic prowess. Even the dragon thing tracks with smart person feeling they can handle thing they cant.
But more importantly think of the story ways in which this could be used. First off, what does a new species do for potions and alchemy? Can these creatures lead to new cures and discovery? I feel I have never seen that as a plot. What a cool springboard for having your world gain acess to never before seen potion/artifact/ritual/treatment.
Also for those folks who want to do a, redeem a Snape, feels him becoming a research professor studying their potential uses alongside Hagrid both, solves the issue of him being mean to kids, and also creates just, insane fun comedy/plot potential. Plus growth. Snape and Hagrid working together doing research and becoming maybe friends would be just, amazing.
Sidenote: For those who slash ship, just a note if you find pairing Snape with any guy fine but with Hagrid some silly concept, maybe and not trying to be mean but do genuinely consider how much of that is being influenced by hating fat people or some eugenics concept of intelligence you have. Because Hagrid is in fact a person just like anyone else.
That said this concept doesn't need Snape at all for folks who don't want to write him or hate him or such. Focus on Hagrid or Dumbledore or even maybe this is what sparks Harry getting into potions/alchemy/whatever connection. Maybe Hermoine figures out some great use. Maybe the twins accidentally while messing with it for prank stuff accidentally stumble into finding a use for it that helps the war.
Just think, anyone who has played a game with crafting, what happens when you unlock a new crafting material? Tons of new things to create. Why wouldn't this be true in a world in which magical properties exist and tons of magical potions and artifacts exist.
TRDL: Use Blast-Ended Skrewts in your fics beyond simple comedy! The concept of a new species is very interesting.
