The origin of the Hallows has become shrouded in mystery and intrigue.
The more esoteric theories are along the lines that Death itself created them for the Three Brothers, as written in a popular wizarding fairytale book.
Others believe in the more 'sensible' theory that They were created by three ingenious wizards who were essentially ahead of their time, though they were as flawed as any other person can be.
The truth, however, is somewhat more tricky...
Death did indeed create the Hallows, but it wasn't to trap or to claim the Three Brothers' souls and lives.
They were created as tests; tests to meet the high standards it had for... a suitor for its increasingly demanding daughter.
Yeah, Death was worried that his daughter would run off and elope with someone or something, so he basically conned her into an arrangement with the Hallows. There are times when she's not the brightest bulb in the box.
He created them as basically an unwinnable test, with the requirements of potential "Masters" needing outstanding moral fibre (and other convictions/requirements) so strong that the likelihood of passing said requirements would be near enough nil in probability.
Even though there were times throughout history where a wizard united two of the Hallows, such as Dumbledore with the Wand, Cloak, and Stone at various times, it was still confident because they wouldn't pass any of the other requirements.
Until...
Yeah, Harry unintentionally smashed its plan into dust.
First off, he survived an unsurvivable event twice (both as a baby and as an adult) in the Killing Curse not killing him.
He slayed a magical beast without dying, despite coming close to it.
He selflessly and willingly risked his life for a maiden (twice, in fact, but he only needed to do it once).
He willingly sacrificed himself to save others, and a contrived set of circumstances allowed him to 'win' that fail-safe.
Finally, he united the Hallows -- ultimately, he willingly gave up the Wand, kept the Cloak only because it was a family heirloom and not because of power, and despite using the Stone selfishly first off (to see his friends and family as he walked to his death), he ultimately gave it and its trap up, too.
He passed the "impossible" standards.
Now, Death is powerless because his darling daughter is basically stalking her would-be suitor, Harry, to try to date and marry him.
What's worse? Other deities and entities also liked the idea of Death's tests/standards, and they were keeping an eye on the situation, too... to try to poach someone who passed. Dating on that level is so boring because they've "been there, done that" with every deity and being possible over the course of hundreds of thousands of years -- it's a shallow dating pool.
Now that it's finally happened? He's new. He's also now being hit on/"wined and dined" by goddesses directly for themselves (even if they're already married or were married in the past), gods and goddesses and entities trying to marry off their daughters to someone worthy, or said daughters themselves eyeing him up... and all are trying to outdo eachother.
I'd say 'God help him', but gods, goddesses, and other entities like that are the trouble!
"Master of Death" was such a mistranslation!
