My original thought and impressions on horcruxes

So when I first read the books my original thought was that if you make a horcrux and you die, you’d need that horcrux to come back.

Like how in goblet of fire when Voldemort comes back I thought that in the ritual you would need to incorporate the horcrux to come back. Not just have it out in the world ‘somewhere, floating around lol’.

And I honestly like that so much more. Like imagine you make one horcrux, make it a tiny pebble and throw it down the Mariana Trench and you’d be immortal. Like I totally understand that Tom Riddle was vain and super paranoid. So he’d never do that and he needed the items to be of importance but they got lucky with that.

If you needed the horcrux for the ritual in order to come back, you’d need it to be acceptable and it would be another reason for someone to be inclined to make more since they only work once.

What were your guys first thoughts and impressions of horcruxes. And have you seen any fanfictions where they do work differently?
