I am aware in canon he wanted the position long before Harry went to hogwarts. But what if instead he only becomes interested in seeing every year the DADA teacher get a chance to murder Harry....and is quite annoyed how incompetent at child murder they are. When Snape gets the job, bets start going around on which of them will end up dead. McGonagall bets heavy on Harry, she believes in his killer instinct. But Flitwick bets on Snape, remembering how Snape was voted most likely to murder a child while at hogwarts. (Sirius was voted most likely to get his dick stuck in a toaster, a title he earned trice over).
