Ron, being a unique combination of canny and guileless that can only come from being a younger brother to the Weasley Twins tm, immediately finds, befriends, and subsequently kidnaps Harry Potter roughly four years ahead of schedule. Local muggle bookworm Hermione Granger, who also moved into the neighborhood recently and is not nearly so enamoured with Mr Potter or his, ah, sterling reputation, takes it upon herself to correct Mr Weasley's opinion - which all comes to a head when Dudley Dursley picks a fight with a bickering trio.

After all, there's a lot of things you just can't do without becoming stalwart friends, and fighting a troll is one of them.
