Statement of the Prophecy

THE ONE WITH THE POWER TO VANQUISH THE DARK LORD APPROACHES,

BORN TO THOSE WHO HAVE THRICE DEFIED HIM,

BORN AS THE SEVENTH MONTH DIES,

AND THE DARK LORD WILL MARK HIM AS HIS EQUAL,

BUT HE WILL HAVE POWER THE DARK LORD KNOWS NOT,

AND EITHER MUST DESTROY ALL BUT A REMNANT OF THE OTHER,

FOR THOSE TWO DIFFERENT SPIRITS CANNOT EXIST IN THE SAME WORLD.

There has been a more or less unchallenged assumption that THE DARK LORD is Voldemort. /u/AllHumansAreTools suggested that that might be thinking too small: What if it's Death?

Here's the difference: This now means the Peverell line, not his parents.

AND THE DARK LORD WILL MARK HIM AS HIS EQUAL,

This is the weak point, IMO, but I think it's fixable. Obvious theories are Patronus 2.0 and/or the scared Dementor. Improbable theories might include actual immunity to the Killing Curse.

This is probably Patronus 2.0, which is why the previous line doesn't quite make sense.

AND EITHER MUST DESTROY ALL BUT A REMNANT OF THE OTHER,

FOR THOSE TWO DIFFERENT SPIRITS CANNOT EXIST IN THE SAME WORLD.

Well, Harry certainly is going to end non-voluntary death or die trying. And by 'die trying', I mean "prolong his life through any means, no matter the drawbacks, as long as he can still do research."

Obviously, this ties into the Ch. 96 prophecy as well.

Three shall be Peverell's sons and three their devices by which Death shall be defeated.

Spoken in the presence of the three Peverell brothers, in a small tavern on the outskirts of what would later be called Godric's Hollow.

In this interpretation, this provides a clear roadmap for Harry: Assemble the three Deathly Hallows. At a guess, he should then be able to reverse-engineer them and find a method of overriding the instructions.
