Basically the idea is that spells are console commands that allow specific tagged beings inside of a synthetic universe to alter the rules of that universe to some extent. The only counter evidence I can see is the "single pass" time travel though anyone seriously trying to test it meets with stern and disturbing warnings, which to me screams outside involvement. This could also explain how Tom survives the death of his body when brain damage can make you unable to speak or think and why spells require a specific pass phrase.
