It seems like everyone is blowing up over the finale and hating the fact that it was a thing that happened. Not that the reaction is unjust. But since you all hated it, what would you have done differently? How would you have ended it? Feel free to suggest how the entire ninth season should have played out, the last episode, or the ending only.
I'll admit that I didn't watch really any of the season and caught only most of the finale, but I was also upset. Personally, I would have ended it with the talking under the umbrella scene followed by Bob Saget's voice over the shot of the kids on the couch: "...and that kids, is the story of how I met your mother." And then his kids stare at him for a bit and say something along the lines of "Seriously Dad? That was just a story of how you slept with every girl in New York! And all the crazy shenanigans Uncle Barney and [other ridiculous shenanigans about Robin/Marshall/Lilly]." They also could have started yelling at him for some of the ridiculous/terrible things their father did. And they could have thrown somewhere in there that the mother was dead like "Mom would be rolling in her grave if she heard you telling us these stories!" And Ted (Bob Saget) is just acting embarrassed, and the show fades to black and Ted gets one more funny line in. Roll credits. And there's nothing about getting back with Robin because that way, the point of the show (the title) still stands.
Oh, and that's also cutting out all the extra scenes of after Robin and Barney's wedding. You can't throw in 10 years of stuff into 20 minutes
