How to overcome gym anxiety?

I’m 21 years old, quite skinny and I’ve always been self conscious about my body. I want to start going to the gym but every time I think about joining I always make excuses/put it off. I have no friends either so I can’t ask them to come with me.
Do you have any advice on how to overcome this? Any tips on gym etiquette and what to bring to the gym? Any advice would be much appreciated. TIA.
