How does W (Hallowed Mist) interact with damaging surface and pets?

I'm asking because after playing against many different champs, the interactions seem a bit confusing.
F. e. GP barrels dont damage you in W, but Shaco boxes actually do (always without the champ inside). I'd guess that it protects you from Ori ball and Azir soldiers, but what about Singed poison? Does anyone have a firm grasp on how the ability actually works?
