Help! I have never been able to join party's.

As the title suggests I play on PC I have downloaded the steam version. Now when I go to the friend's section and where it says invite to party it is grayed out and will not let me invite. I am assuming this also means I never receive any invites as well. Is there a fix or does anyone have information on this issue? Thanks in advance!
