Amp Speaker Dimensions?

I've been looking at getting myself a new guitar amp this holiday season but I never asked the question about the dimensions of the speakers in the amp. What is y'all's input on the size of the speakers. From what I understand, the bigger the speaker the better bass response, but is anything compromised? Is a smaller speaker going to have a clearer high frequency response like for tweeters? Are the modern 12 inch speakers the best size for versatile modern tones?
