I started playing guitar in a band with some guys. They only play 1950's rock, or rockabilly, while I'm more of a metal and blues guy. The leader (and vocalist) of the band invited me to play with them on a gig. He told me to play some simple solos and fills while he played rythmic guitar. He also told me they were really driven by improvisation so if I wanted to play some cool solos or fills, just go ahead! If I wanted the solo to last twice as long, no problem! It seemed really cool, and I began to practice some of the songs so I atleast know what we are playing. We haven't played together before this btw.
When we actually played the gig, I really enjoyed myself, and I thought it sounded really nice! But during the first break we had, they immediately gave me some feedback, which I understood and appreciated. But they wanted me to play the songs just as they are originally played, so I got really limited of what I could play now. During the rest of the gig I was basicly in the background just playing simple notes to accompany the rythm. My solos turned really stale and lifeless because it had to sound like the original as best as it could. So all the "improv" turned to bullshit and I began to play worse by the night. All of the bandmembers are really talented, and I really enjoyed hearing them play, but I didn't enjoy playing myself. After the gig they asked me to play with them for another gig 1 month from now, but I don't feel like I fit in.
The thing is, they are the only ones I have to play with. If I quit the band, I don't have anyone else, but I didn't enjoy it. Should I give it more time, or find something else?
