Hi all,

I want to learn how to record a synchronized audio video recording of myself playing the guitar (while the original song is playing in the background) for a song where the guitar's effect sound changes during the song.

I have a focusrite scarlett solo 2i2, a macbook pro with garageband and a webcam, an ESP LTD electric guitar, and a few options for headphones/earphones to listen to the song as i play and record.

How can i use the aforementioned equipment to instantly switch between effects while playing my cover/do something else that doesn't require doing anything while playing recording, so that the transition in effect sounds seamless and accurate in the audio video recording of my finished cover?

I'm pretty new to recording covers using audio interfaces and DAWs like garageband and would really love to learn what seems to be a simple idea/method to many people who have more experience with the guitar and recording than i do.

Is this something that i can implement in my cover after i play through the whole song with my audio interface connected to my mac and guitar while recording audio in garageband and video on my webcam? for example, after playing through the song, can i go back to the recorded track and change what effects occur at different points in the recording?

I've always been very confused about how to effectively cover songs that utilize a shift in guitar effect in the middle of the song. there are so many songs that i want to cover that do this, so i would greatly appreciate any helpful insight to my questions. :)

Lastly, a couple of potential solutions i thought of (again, i'm quite inexperienced with regard to recording, so they might seem silly) are:

1) while recording audio and video, play through the full song while plugged in and in sync with the original song by using headphones to play along. then, take the one recorded audio track file in garageband and copy paste it into a new track in the same garageband project. then, use one effect/amp setup for one track and another effect/amp setup for the other track (the one that i copied pasted). lastly, cut/clip the audio recording at the point where the guitar effect changes, and mix/combine the two separate audio tracks together.

Or 2) get a device that i can press with my foot while playing recording that can do a basic mouse/keyboard function in order to switch to a different preset amp within garageband and start to record on another track when the effect switches in the song?

Apologies for the long-winded post. i'm inexperienced and not the most savvy with regard to terminology and my understanding of these nuanced topics. hoping to learn. :)

Thanks so much.

Best,

Ritty
